Abstract: It is fascinating to observe art coming into being. Processes of production inscribe themselves into the resulting works and co-produce a processual aesthetics of art. In fact, art work and artefact both carry the process that led to them – the working/making of materials into something – in their very names, thus always highlighting ‘madeness’ as part of their being. The human hand is an important actor in processual aesthetics. Hands interact with tools and materials and to observe them in action provides not only cognitive input for understanding making but also aesthetic pleasure by affording a re-experience of process. A lot of research concerned with the history and theory of art making is based on the (implicit) appreciation of processual aesthetics. But finding beauty in acts of making is also an expression of the balancing act between caring and consuming; a balancing act in which the art work is caught in the middle. Can processual aesthetics be expanded to include unmaking, decay, and degrowth?
