Generating Visibility

Conference on the photographic and
cinematic work of Abbas Kiarostami

The meeting focuses on drafts and concepts of image and visibility in one perspective combining both media – photography and film. Furthermore, it is about the specific aesthetics of the Iranian auteur, which is hoped to be defined more precisely by exemplarily analysing works and cycles.

The Picture-Turn, which is stressed out thematically in the photography, pushes the documentarily inspired Film-Turn, seen in the cinematographic work, aside, yet next to it.

Picture, film and reality form a tense exchange, tearing down the borders between them and still generate an internal and external interlock – entirely in line with elaborated modern media aesthetics.

It generates cinematic visibility, which keeps the diversity of picture, non-picture, of fiction and document or of film, film-in-film, constantly rotating. The conference examines the films and photography of Kiarostami not only with means of art history and intermediality, but also looks at perspectives in analysis, theory and history of film.

The meeting is a cooperation of Stiftung Situation Kunst with the professorship in Film Studies with the main subject Film Theory and Film Aesthetics of the Institute of Media Studies (RUB).
